s and The Sun Also Rises relate to how "the tragic fact of war or the aftereffects of social disruption tend to inhibit and betray the normal course of love" ("Wastelanders" 23). During the First World War, and immediately after, young people were in a state of confusion regarding moral values. This confusion was reflected in their feelings about interpersonal relationships. It is for this reason that failures in love became an important theme in the literature of the post-war writers. The theme of loss of love which is expressed in both A Farewell to Arms and The Sun Also Rises serves to effectively capture the overall feelings of loss which resulted from the destruction of the war.

The main character in The Sun Also Rises is Jake Barnes. He is an American expatriate living in Paris. He falls in love with a promiscuous woman named Brett Ashley; however, because of his war wound he is unable to have a sexual relationship with her.
