Basketball Coach Bob Knight

0 percent ("Knight," 1987, p. 317).

Soon after Knight obtained his bachelor's degree in 1962, he landed himself a job as assistant basketball coach at a small high school in Ohio. Even then, he was beginning to develop a reputation for having a volatile temper. During his first game with the high school team, Knight angrily broke a clipboard when things weren't going well on the court ("Knight," 1987, p. 316). In 1963, Knight was hired as assistant basketball coach at the prestigious West Point Military Academy. Soon after, he was promoted to the position of head coach despite the fact that he was considered very young for the job. Within a year, Knight took the weak West Point team and turned it into a winning unit. At West Point, Knight continued to be known for his violent temper. At the same time, however, he learned a valuable lesson which became an important part of his coaching strategy. This was the lesson of discipline. The military environment at West Point was perfect for the development of this particular skill. Throughout his career as a coach, Knight has always been very strict with his players, demanding no less from them than he does from himself (Stern, 1983, p. 381). Instilling this type of discipline in his players has been an important key to Knight's success.

In 1971, Knight became head coach of the Hoosiers at Indiana University in Bloomington. Immediately, he began subjecting the Indiana team to the techniques of discipline that he had developed at West Point. During practices, he demanded that his players remain silent so they could concentrate on the game. In addition, he refused to allow spectators to watch the practices because he did not want the players to be distracted in any way ("Knight," 1987, p. 316). These changes were in direct contrast to the conditions that existed at Indiana University prior to Knight's arrival. Knight's disciplinary system showed immediate results.
