996, pp. 19-22); how microbes metabolize chemicals (including wastes) to use oxygen and produce energy and new cells (S&S, 1996, pp. 22-33); and, eventually, "eutroph-ication"--a microbial and higher life-form succession of organisms using inorganic chemicals and one another, plus sunlight, to derive energy for their own survival in the world's waterways, mostly lakes and reservoirs (S&S, 1996, pp. 43-53).

3. Environmental Engineering Hydrology -- Defined as "the study of the properties, distribution, and behavior of water in nature" (S&S, 1996, p. 60), hydrology is described in Chapter 3 for surface water, as comprised of precipitation and surface runoff (S&S, 1996, pp. 62-74) [but not comprised of stream or estuary flow, strangely]; reservoirs (S&S, 1996, pp. 74-77); and groundwater--as influenced mostly by wells rather than by natural forces of gravity or capillary action (S&S, 1996, pp. 77-84).

While causes of surface water pollution or its controls are not described, parts of Chapter 3 (S&S, 1996, pp. 84-92) do describe groundwater contamination and its control(s)--given as "physical containment" by sunken barriers or "extraction" by pumping or excavation for disposal (S&S, 1996, p. 86).

4. Environmental Engineering Hydraulics and Pneumatics -- The fourth chapter covers the planned movement of fluids, water and air, as they are to be moved in closed conduits like water mains, sewers, and air ducts. The first subsystem described is the water main network used in developed-country urban areas for the distribution of treated public water supplies (S&S, 1996, pp. 99-120). The actual hydraulic computations are described in a subsection called "Hydraulics of the Distribution System" (S&S, 1996, pp. 113-20). In contrast to pressurized water distribution systems, sewage or wastewater (S&S, 1996, pp. 120-29) is almost universally collected by a network of fairly large sewers (large compared to water mains) that operate by gravit...
