Numerous studies have supported the claim that there is a link between television violence and aggressive behavior in children. In particular, there is evidence that young children tend to imitate the actions that they see on TV. Sometimes this imitative behavior is only temporary. However, in many cases it becomes a permanent part of the child's character. Thus, it has been noted that cartoons and other children's programs often serve as "powerful behavioral models" with long-term effects (Katz, 1991, p. 113). Again, this impact does not result only from realistic depictions of violence on the screen. In the words of Dr. Salk, even cartoons such as The Road Runner encourage children "to act violently" (Salk, 1991, p. 50).
