hildren are segregated from the rest of the school by their common inability to speak English. However, with total immersion, such students are kept with the native-English speaking students rather than being separated. In the total immersion method, all teachers are given ESL training "so that immigrant youngsters can remain in classes with their nativeEnglish speaking peers" (Leslie, Glick & Gordon, 1991, p. 57). This is clearly a more competitive approach to running a classroom. Because of its competitiveness, the total immersion approach forces non-English speaking students to absorb the English language at a more rapid pace than either the bilingual education approach or the ESL approach.

There are arguments for and against both bilingual education and English-only. Those who favor the English-only approach argue that bilingual education is limited in its ability to help foreign-language students master English.
