After the Battle of the Little Big Horn, the U.S. government continued to carry out its plans for the subordination of the Indians. Many Indian tribes were forced to live on reservations. These were areas where the Indians were kept confined under government supervision. Most Indians resented being degraded and repressed in this way. Corruption and racism among the white agents running the reservations made matters even worse. In 1887, the government passed the Dawes Act, which sounded good on the surface because it offered individual Indians a chance to own parcels of land. However, even this could be seen as a means for subordinating the Indian tribes. In particular, the Dawes Act sought to assimilate the Indians into white society. In this way, it was designed to separate the Indians from each other and thereby keep them from rebelling against the government.
