Racial discrimination is the second most prevalent form of prejudice in the workplace. Despite the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 1960's, blacks and other racial minorities continue to experience discrimination in their efforts to make a living in the United States. Racial discrimination has been found to have a severe psychological impact on its victims. As a result of racism, self-doubt and a variety of other "disorientations" can result (J. E. White, 1991, p. 25). These feelings cause further difficulties for racial minorities in terms of achieving career success. In the early 1990's, racial discrimination continues to be very strong in America. In fact, it has been found strong anti-black stereotypes are held even by many African-Americans. This is true even among African-Americans who have received higher education (J. E. White, 1991, p. 26).

As bad as the situation is for black people in general, there is no doubt that the situation for black women is worse. This fact was brought out by the recent Clarence Thomas judicial confirmation trial. In that trial, the testimony of Anita Hill alleging sexual harassment on the part of Thomas was largely discredited. As such, the testimony of the black man won out over that of the black woman.
