On tables in the lecture room display real foods and actual portion sizes of foods on serving plates for a typical day of excellent nutrition. Set the tables attractively with dishes and linens that would appeal to Nigerian women. Use foods that they are familiar with. After the visual presentation ask the women to move around the room and look at the display tables, noting particularly proportions of foods and the serving sizes. Research shows us that most people don't know the best serving sizes for each food group.

Send home with each woman a graphic drawing of the pyramid showing each level (6 to 11 servings of bread and grains, 3 to 5 servings of vegetables, 2 to 4 servings of fruit, 2 to 3 servings of protein and meat, sparing use of fats and sugars.

I. Exercise - Bring in a guest lecturer or guest assistant who is Nigerian, pregnant (visibly so), and a professional in the field of physical therapy, yoga arts, dance or nursing (someone with obvious credibility).

A. Briefly demonstrate exercises for alleviating lower back stress, rib cage lifting, and leg elevating (Soman, 1972, p. 56). B. Demonstrate muscle dissociation for relaxation during labor contractions and practice controlling the Kegel muscle. Demonstrate relaxation techniques (Milinaire, 1974, p.33).

C. Send home picture handouts of instructions for the exercises. Have an artist do the drawings so that they resemble the Nigerian women.

A. Show large pictures in color of the dramatic problems that occur with babies that are born of addictive mothers. Choose portrayals that most dramatize the small size and deformities that arise from fetal alcohol syndrome and drug infants and show side by side a picture of a healthy baby.
