factors inherent in non-Catholic parents' decision to place and retain children in Catholic school, (2) the religious impact on the parents of giving children a parochial education, and (3) the impact on the Catholic schools of dealing with so many non-Catholics.

Rath's (1995) study is based on interviews of twenty-six African-American families with one or more children currently or recently enrolled in a Chicago Catholic school. The interviews were gathered using the snowball technique and took place between May 1991 and July 1992. An additional fifty people (including priests and school officials) were interviewed to provide background information and context to all observed findings.

Results of the study indicated that churches have become more accepting of other Christian denominations, and the majority of African-American parents retain their religions.
