The Literacy Matters website, located at: www.literacymatters.org/content/readandwrite/reading.htm is a resource for teachers, providing information on various programs about teaching reading skills to adolescents, and covers such topics as reading and its importance, reading expository text, vocabulary, how to read a textbook, and reading and interpreting diverse materials. It tells teachers what content reading involves, why teaching reading is important in the content area, how to help students become strategic readers, and gives general information on teaching content. It also provides many links for such subjects in reading as teaching comprehension in a reader's workshop, reading workshops, technology integration resources, learning to learn: the basic principles of informed strategy training, comprehending different texts: fiction and nonfiction, strategies for teaching reading, collaborative strategic reading, reading assessment: think-alouds as on-line measures of comprehension, and using subject area reading materials. The site gives suggestions for lessons in these various areas.

There is a set of lessons which can be accessed under a link called teacher lessons and tools for content reading which includes guidelines and student handouts for implementing reading aloud strategies in your class, creating strategic readers, reading comprehension strategies, reading across the curriculum, and a road map for content-area reading.

As well as the reading section, the www.literacymatters.org website offers similar information for social studies, text structure, science, math and study strategies. It is a broad-based support site for teachers, containing a lot of information and dozens of links to other sources of information on specific areas of teaching.
