Classroom Motivation & Academic Achievement

A study looking at the relationship between classroom motivation and academic achievement looked at mastery motivation and academic achievement and judgment motivation and academic achievement in first and third grade children (The Relationship 1-46). The study examined 251 first and third grade students in a mid-sizes Southern City. In general the results showed that intrinsic motivation was positively related to a child's academic motivation. A positive relationship existed between classroom motivation and academic achievement among first and third grade children. As intrinsic motivation increased, academic achievement increased. Mastery and judgment motivation were related to higher grades in third grade children. For first grade children, only mastery motivation was significant to academic achievement. This suggests a link between intelligence and motivation.

A longitudinal study looking at the relationship between a set of student input and environmental throughput variables in predicting output human capital skills acquisition and academic achievement was carried out at a large Canadian university (Cote and Levine 58-80). It was found that the input intelligence quotient was negatively related to output human capital skills and of various measures of adjustment to the university setting. However, a measure of input motivation for personal and intellectual development best predicted output skills acquisition and academic achievement, independent of intelligence quotient. These results suggest motivation may be more of a driving force than intelligence in knowledge acquisition, and the two may operate independently.
