Unit of Analysis. The depression levels of persons aged 65 or more who were receiving home care but were not currently under psychiatric care were measured before and after team intervention and were compared to the levels of such persons who received GP but not team care.

Sampling Procedure. Recruitment of eligible subjects began with screening for self-reports of depression, proceeded with a home visit requesting consent, and was completed with a "semistructured" psychiatric diagnosis. Control (GP-treated) and test (team-treated) groups were identified at random by three-digit number--even for test and odd for control groups. GPs were informed that their patient(s) were participating and invited to refer them to the team as needed.

Sample Size. Out of the 441 subjects initially deemed eligibe for the study, natural attrition, refusal or inability to provide consent, and death dropped all but 69 from the experiment--36 control and 33 intervention subjects. These subjects had been diagnosed with dep
