The following divisions have strategic planning authority, and that task has been complicated somewhat since the merger because the divisions must strategize in non-competing areas. The Divisions are: AOL MovieFone, CompuServe, Digital City, ICQ, MapQuest.com, Netscape, SHOUTcast, Spinner.com, When.com, Winamp, iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions and Digital Marketing Services.

Each of the above divisions is a separately functioning entity with separate and diverse profit reporting responsibilities, and as such, they are not considered in the primary functional areas of AOL.

The corporate culture has been described as "Aggressive efficiency" and the company makes this statement in its Annual Report. "As of June 30, 2000, the Company had approximately 15,000 employees. America Online believes that its relations with its employees are good. None of the Company's employees are represented by a labor union and the Company has never experienced a work stoppage" (Annual Report, 2000, p. 42).
