Women's History

Women's history has the disadvantage of most histories that have been written in that those histories were either written or edited by the conquered, in this case, men. Because of this, the conquering society has been able to decide what was "real" history, what was "worth" writing, and what was to be censored out. This not only limited what was known about women for those trying to study women's history, but it also suppressed the truth that all those women wanted to express (Heilbrun, 1988). This limited and defined what a woman was supposed to be, her worth and potential, much like when the pre-Civil War Congress agreed on limiting slaves to count as only 2/3 of a white male or "real person". While it may be obvious that this limited women in achieving their potential, what is not so obvious is the impact that the contemporary feminist movement has had on both men in the movement and men in general. This paper will outline the history of the women's movement and then discuss and examine the impact that this movement has had and will have on men in general as well as men actively involved in the movement.

Rights for women is not a new issue. Queen Elizabeth I of England fought to keep her power and independence by keeping her courtiers at bay when they wanted to marry her off. Catherine the Great of Russia had been able to declare her self Empress only because she had married the right man and he had died. During the Age of Enlightenment, women like Abigail Adams from the United States were pushing to be accepted on equal terms with men, to be awarded equal opportunities and suffrage. While Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were striving for equal opportunities for women in the United States, Rose Scott, Nellie McClung, and Millicent Garrett Fawcett, were doing the same in Australia, Canada, and England respectively (Allen, 1998).
