Shore (1997) reported on the new insights from brain-based research, which in some cases conflict with old notions. In the last 15 years, neuroscientists have come to realize that their earlier conclusions regarding the baby's brain structure being genetically determined, was not quite accurate. In fact the early months and years also effect the brain's later development. Brains may be born with certain genes but interaction with an enriched environment with nourishment and care results in increased development. However, most of the brain's synapses are developed during the first three years, pointing to the importance of early development (Shore, 1997).
