Sample Selection Procedure and Data Collection Procedure

A decision was made to test the hypotheses on data collected from cable television subscribers residing in Northern New Jersey. The sample was selected with the cooperation of the cable television service providers in the area. The cooperating cable television service providers submitted to the researcher lists of subscribers identified only by a number. The researcher applied random selection procedures to the lists to identify 981 subscribers. The number of subscribers selected was larger than the required sample because it was assumed that the subscriber response rate of completed, usable survey questionnaires would be less than 50 percent.

The cooperating cable television service providers then submitted the researcher's survey questionnaire to the selected subscribers. The first 327 completed and usable surveys returned to the cooperating cable television services providers (an in turn to the researcher) constituted the research sample for the study.

The final data sources for the study were among cable television subscribers in Northern New Jersey who were selected for the research sample and who returned completed, usable survey questionnaires. The first 327 completed, usable survey questionnaires were the final data sources for the study.

The survey instrument was designed to develop data that was relevant to each of the hypotheses to be tested in the study. The null hypotheses to be tested in the study are as follows:

H10: Variations in prices of cable television services are not associated with the governmental regulation of cable television services.

H20: Variations in subscriber perceptions of the quality of cable television services are not associated with the governmental regulation of cable television services.
