h is currently the mayor of Sunnydale, who has hired the principal to spy on Buffy and who is also going to give the speech at graduation. Besides a speech however, the mayor also plans to feast on the graduating seniors. Typical of many Buffy episodes then, this ends up being another gothic tale of youth and beauty against adult monsters. Genge refers to this as the typical intergenerational confusion or envy that inhabits the Buffy series and draws on adolescents' feelings of alienation (Genge 22). Buffy and her gang are able to rescue the day, however, by enlisting the help of their fellow classmates who have concealed weapons beneath their robes and are willing to fight back. While Buffy is able to defeat the demon, by the time she is done, the high school buildings have been completely destroyed. Yet, as her Watcher, Giles, reminds her, she has survived the rite of passage known as graduation.
