Dwyer (1994) found that weight loss over time was highly associated with mortality, even when medical diagnoses that might explain the weight loss were taken into account. "Further analysis revealed that weight loss was particularly highly associated with mortality over 2 years among elderly residents with dementia or Alzheimer's Disease, many of whom required assistance with feeding" (Dwyer, 1994, p. 16). Dwyer (1994) found also that protein-calorie malnutrition and vitamin and mineral deficiencies, while less common, also were present in some elders, and that one of the disease-related causes was Alzheimer's Disease.

Kalaria (1996) reported that the integrity of the cerebral vasculature is crucial to the maintenance of cognitive functions during aging.
