Race, Class, Gender, Sexuality and the Family

Diversity is not a concept limited solely to the work place or for politics; diversity is a concept very close to "home." In fact, a person's gender, race or class may impact the family relationships in either positive or negative ways, especially in the areas of marriage, childrearing, and overall levels of satisfaction at home. So,"diversity" then, is not a homogeneous issue, the interactions between ethnicity and socioeconomic status most definitely affect family structure and it's intricate inner workings. As most know, society is impacted by the kind of relationships a person has with his or her family, and can heavily influence societal contribution and meaningful relationships outside of family. Respectively, if family bonds (or lack there of) negatively impact a person's life for either cultural, societal, psychological or financial reasons, a breaking point in a family might occur, either good or bad. A few affective areas to explore are gender and class.

In relation to gender, issues impacting a family revolve around marital expectations of a man or woman, how they were raised independent of their marriage and how they see themselves living out their roles as man and woman, and more importantly, husband and wife. Marriage is probably one of the largest areas impacted by gender roles in a family, most notably, if a man and woman share similar sociolgoical, spiritual and intellectual views on what an "ideal" husband or wife is, the marriage is most likely to be fruitful despite dealing with the major differences of just being man and woman. Another key area impacting family due to gender issues is childraising, how much time a mother should spend with her children "ideally," and how much time and what kind of time a good father should spend with his children.
