orces. The MOOTW concept, from this perspective, could include anything from guerilla warfare to various forms of limited engagements that fell short of total war. The MOOTW concept, as it has evolved in the decade of the 1990s, however, has become virtually codified and includes some of the earlier perceptions of non traditional military conflict, as well as some activities that were not necessarily so viewed prior to 1990 (12:2-3).

In the contemporary period, the MOOTW concept is used as a means of differentiating what are viewed as being the primary roles and missions of the United States armed forces from all of the other roles and missions that the armed forces are asked to assume. The approach to the MOOTW concept has led to a definition of the concept that includes primarily peacekeeping, peacemaking, and humanitarian activities. (12:3-4).
