Immediately, this title implies that there will be a cowboy and that he rides at midnight. Once the movie begins, the audience is actually introduced to a cowboy putting himself into costume. Cowboys are gentle frontiersmen with 'aw shucks' manners and Jon Voight plays this one to the hilt. His friendship with Rico is aesthetically more like that between a prize stable stud and a rat that exists beneath the hay in his barn, yet the cowboy like the horse stud tolerates the Rico the rat's existence and Rico is a rat.

Midnight also implies darkness or black emptiness and the cowboy in this story definitely exhibits through his 'midnight' dreams a dark and abusive past.
