, Kowal (1998) sees the APN in family practice as an "entrepreneur" capable of working to move the entire organization toward innovative care delivery system development.

The APN wears many different "hats" simultaneously and must possess the knowledge and skills needed to move from one role to another. In family practice, the APN must be able to function as a clinician and as a case manager. In the former role, his or her nursing skills are called into play in actual nursing service provision, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prescription or intervention. In the latter role, as a consultant or case manager, the APN is seen by Kowal (1998) as working to ensure that patients' needs are met uniformly, that necessary internal and external resources are brought to bear on a patient's case, and that appropriate follow-up is conducted to ensure that all needs have been met and that outcomes are as expected.
