ACLU TODAY

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This paper examines the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The examination focuses on the following issues:

Organizational identification (what the organization does and why it exists)

Organizational financing (the sources of funding for the organization)

Organizational motivation (the drivers of the organization's activities)

Organizational involvement in court actions (types of cases and specific cases pursued by the organization)

The ACLU was for in 1920 to launch an effort to roll back governmental restrictions on constitutionally guaranteed civil liberties in the United States and to deter future governmental efforts to curb civil liberties (American Civil Liberties Union 1-5).

The ACLU pursues cases in relation to all aspects of civil liberties. In most instances, however, the cases pursued by the ACLU involve direct challenges to actions that the organization considers to be unconstitutional (American Civil Liberties Union 1-4).

The ACLU's mission is to fight civil liberties violations wherever and whenever they occur. Most of our clients are ordinary people whoáhave experienced an injustice and have decided to fight back. The ACLU is also active in our national and state capitals, fighting to ensure that the Bill of Rights will always be more than a "parchment barrier" against government oppression and the tyranny of the majority. As a rational philosophical consideration of the issue of abortion gave way to political debate, the pro-choice forces contend that abortion opponents simply cause poor women to suffer, because women with sufficient financial support will be able to obtain medically abortions regardless of laws and social strictures. To this contention, the pro-life forces offer the counter argument that supporters of a woman's right to an abortion are attempting to simply legitimize a "quick fix" for an inconvenient problem. Abortion is one of the most divisive issues in the United States. In most instances, neither proponents of reproductive rights for women nor strident anti-abortionist advocates are able to develop any sort of middle ground between their positions. The Congress largely reflects the public split on the issue and encounters similar difficulties in reaching any sort of compromise. Presidential administrations tend to be either solidly for reproductive rights or staunchly pro-life in
