He was elected to the new House of Burgesses, but when he attempted to take his seat, Governor Berkeley had Bacon arrested. He was soon released, at which time Bacon gathered his supporters and coerced Berkeley into granting him a military commission. After a short time, Bacon effectively ruled the Virginia colony. Bacon's rule ended with his sudden death in October of 1676. B
