Since the time of the ancient Greeks, education has been divided into two major areas - one preparing students for a working career in some trade or profession, and the other preparing them for a life free of manual work. Even in higher education, this division still persists today. There are schools of engineering, architecture, science, etc. which prepare students for a hands-on career in the working world, and schools of liberal arts, where philosophy and thinking are encouraged for those who will seek a career in society, politics, and civic life. Dewey (1966, p. 261) believes that a democratic society should do away with this division and design a course of study which makes leisurely pursuits a reward for accepting the responsibility for a service, rather than expecting it as a right, and being exempt from performing one.

The idea of a Aliberal@ education stems also from the early Greeks, who made a mind-body duality - those with minds partaking in a liberal education, while those with only a body to offer trained for more manual and servile pursuits (Brubacher, 1982, p. 76). The question today arises as to whether undergraduates should receive a more liberal education, and leave the specialty training for postgraduate years (Brubacher, 1982, pp. 74-75). In most universities today, while the first year or two usually includes a general education (English, math, etc.), specialization for careers in science, engineering, and other such technical areas begins in the undergraduate years. Thus a liberal education is abandoned at an early stage, and the division between workers with the mind and workers with the body begins.

Since education is so much more widespread today, and most people receive at least a basic education, more and more people are open to a more liberal approach as they have been taught to use their minds, not just their bodies, and have leisure time in which to enjoy the fruits...
