The Native American issue has extended itself beyond a nuisance, and although I realize that the government is working very hard to tend to one of our nation's biggest "problems", I write this proposal to make a suggestion. Please do not mistake this as a document to criticize the time frame in which our nation has taken to absolve itself of it's sin. First of all, if I may, let's call apples apples and Native Americans, Indians. Not only does it take longer to say Native Americans, but who knows if anyone was here before them - and really, if it was good enough for Christopher Columbus, can it really be all that bad a term?
I think that society cannot progress positively with any dark spots on its soul, which is why it is important to forget, rather than dwell, on the past and our past 'mistakes'.
We must first desensitize ourselves to the abrasiveness of such terms that many find offensive. I propose that we start by using words, such as Indians, Redskins, Braves, etc. as often as possible, in a somewhat commercial sense, so as to lighten the mood surrounding our past.
