A Role for Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Emergency Care Settings

hospitals is the use of advanced nurse practitioners to deliver various elements of primary care in emergency care settings (Buchan & Powers, 1997; Schweikart, 1996). Frequently, the use of advanced nurse practitioners in such roles has been found to be both cost-effective and conducive to improved care outcomes (Bache, 2001).

Advanced nurse practitioners are not substitutes for physicians, but their use can be improve the use of organizational resources without compromising patient care quality in tightly defined independent roles. One important factor affecting the success of such a strategy is the acceptance by other health care professionals of a well-defined independent role for advanced nurse practitioners. The focus of the proposed study will be the assessment of the level of support for an opposition among other health care professionals to such a role for advanced nurse practitioners.
