Most of the studies reported in the literature related to the positive effects of participation in extracurricular activities in the frequency of depression were concerned with the effects of sports and athletics. The literature generally reports highly positive effects of physical exercise and activity on the frequency of depression. Thus, in one context, one may state that physical exercise, more than extracurricular sports, has the strongest positive impact on adolescent experiences of depression. Importantly, however, many studies show that interaction in a wide range of activities reduces social isolation and, in turn, lowers the frequency of the depression experience.
