A FIELD OBSERVATIN ANALYSIS OF THE ADEQUACY OF SCHOOL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH BIO-MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Type of setting: [x] segregated site

1. What kind of classroom did you observe?

I observed a classroom at an autism/developmental delay center. The students attend 2 hours per day, five days per week.

2. What is the grade level of the classroom?

Preschool with the students ranging from two to four years of age.

3. How many students are there in the classroom?

There were five students in the classroom.

All five students had disabilities.

B. How many students do not have disabilities?

None of the students were free of disabilities. The clinic serves children with pervasive developmental disorders and classes are conducted for two-hour periods that consist of around five students with similar disability problems.

4. Identify at least two students in the classroom who have different bio-medical conditions and/or technological supports.

Her medical history suggests that future acute episodes are likely since they have occurred since age one year. Parents are learning more effective ways of dealing with her behavior which will hopefully decrease needs for emergency procedures. When acute phases occur at the clinic/school, attendants restrict the child's movements, with restraints when necessary. Emergency procedures: Due to T.'s acute episodes at home her parents have been forced to utilize the hospital emergency room and hospitalizations have been necessary. The school attendants are better trained to deal with these episodes and emergency procedures have not been necessary when they occur at the school.
