Anatomy of the Eye and LASIK

A Discussion on the Anatomy of the Eye and LASIK

Arguably, the eye is one of the most important organs of the human body. Through the eye (and the brain), we are able to make sense of the world around us and enjoy the subtle shadings of a sunset. In the simplest terms, the eye is like a camera.(Freudenrich) It is composed of various components that ultimately allow us to see. The opening is called the pupil. The lens system includes the transparent covering of the eye called the cornea and a spherical lens, a filmy substance called the retina and a set of muscles. The muscles are important because it controls the "size of the opening, the shape of the lens system and the movements of the eye." (Freudenrich)

Images are formed when light goes through the cornea and pupil and is refracted by the lens. The iris, an eye muscle that gives it is distinct color, controls the size of the pupil. (http://webvision.med.utah.edu/anatomy.html) The cornea, which covers the iris and pupil, with the crystalline lens allows the "the production of a sharp image at the retinal photoreceptor level." It is (http://webvision.med.utah.edu/anatomy.html) It is interesting, to note, that the image becomes inverted. (http://www.tedmontgomery.com/the_eye/) Another surprising point is that "the cornea contains the highest concentration of nerve fibers of any body structure" (http://www.tedmontgomery.com/the_eye/) It is the most powerful structure of the eye that, along with the crystalline lens, focus in-coming light. Then, the light comes to a focus on the retina. The fovea, located in the retina, is the central point for image focus.(http://webvision.med.utah.edu/anatomy.html) Nerve tissue comprises the retina and senses the light entering the eye. (http://www.tedmontgomery.com/the_eye/) Next, rods or cones, or sensory cells, transform the photon of light that passes through into electrical signals which are u...
