At first blush, the codes of ethics of the three counseling organizations under examination are remarkably similar. As evidence of this, let us examine how they introduce themselves to the "consuming" public via their individual websites. The American Association of Pastoral Counselors explains, "Pastoral counseling is a unique form of counseling which uses spiritual resources as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth. It is provided by certified pastoral counselors, who are not only mental health professionals but who have also had in-depth religious and/or theological training." Turning to the American Counseling Association we learn that their particular counseling product is a result of the fact that "throughout our lives, we encounter many challenges... Conflicts in relationships. Life transitions. Emotional crises.Professional counselors are trained and committed to providing the help and support we may need to master the challenges of life." The third group, The Christian Group for Psychological Studies is a bit more specific in its demographic targeting. "CAPS is a vibrant Christian organization with a rich tradition. . .that encourages in depth consideration of therapeutic research, theoretical and theological issues.
