The Importance of Family

Any of these ideas work, but the idea is that everyone has, or is looking for a home, a place of rest, a place of acceptance and a place where you can come back. For most people, it's not true that "You can't go home again," and the reason for that is the 'family' û family is the first group with which a person identifies û it's made up of your parent(s) and other people who may be related to you, and no doubt, will affect you for the rest of your life. These people look like you, act like you, help you define what you are and where your starting point is.

The psychoanalyst Erik Ericson taught that childhood and society are vitally connected. Since the parent-child relationship is key during the child's formative years, it is fundamental in the development of an individual's sense of trust. The parent-child relationship is often referred to as the prototype for subsequent social functioning. Children who have stable relationships with their parents (or constant caregivers) likewise have good relationships with other people, as they have learned and developed habits that are likely to encourage their development, as well as a developed sense of openness and trust that encourages interpersonal communication. On the other hand, children who are the products of divorce or dysfunctional family groups have more trouble trusting other people, as they have learned from watching their families and the emotions involved, that sometimes even people you love do things or behave in ways that leads other people you love not to trust them (i.e., a 'cheating' husband or a wife who spends the household money on alcohol û extreme but typical examples) (King, 2002).
