Dienbienphu is the Vietnamese site of the great victory of Ho's troops over the French in 1954, a French defeat which drove them finally out of Vietnam, where they had run the country after the Japanese were ousted during World War II, leaving the door open for the American disaster.

Rosa Parks is the black woman whose refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus in 1955 led to her arrest, launched a bus boycott and the national career of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She still serves today as a heroine of the civil rights movement inspired in part by her and her single act of non-violent civil disobedience.

The Marshall Plan was also known as the European Recovery Program, named after Secretary of State George Marshall and aimed at making sure that Europe was strong economically an d politically for the sake of global stability and to prevent communist inroads. The Plan solidified United States relations with European nations and made it possible for the establishment of a solidly capitalist system
