Midsummer Night's Dream

s is a wonderful, complex line, with relevant meanings on several levels. The basic, straightforward interpretation, with parted meaning "split, divided," and double meaning "twice," would render her Demetrius' partner in confusion regarding the previous night's happenings--everything seems a blur, out of kilter, unfocussed. No doubt this is how Hermia would prefer to look upon the night's shenanigans.

But parted and double have other, less naive meanings. Parted can also mean "gifted" (Schmidt 838); double, of course, can mean "duplicitous, false"--and these are more likely the meanings Hermia intends. Everything she thought was certain--Demetrius' and Lysander's love for her, Hermia's friendship--fell apart during the night, when all of them turned on her viciously.
