Popper's theory of falsification stated that a scientist should seek to find an observed exception to the postulated rule and the absence of this contradictory evidence becomes the proof of his theory. In this way the hypothesis is deductively validated by falsifiability criterion.

Theories of the day included those of Freud and Adler, who explained everything with no conceivable observations that could contradict them. Popper saw this ability to explain everything, although appealing, as being what was most wrong with them.
