But beyond the need for a map to guide his action, Fromm argues that man also needs a goal that tells him where to go (1973, p. 231). This paper will argue that goal is in fact man's destiny. Fromm believes that having a brain that permits him to think of the many directions in which he could go actually forces man toward the need for an object of "ultimate concern." He needs an object of devotion to be the focal point of all his strivings and the basis for all his effective values (Fromm, 1973, p. 231). This object would allow for the integration of all his energies into one direction. It would elevate him beyond his isolated existence, with all its doubts and insecurity, and gives meaning to his life. Thus,
