e country is Hinduism. Hindu followers practice a belief system of numerous gods and rituals. There are many sects of belief. All of the sects have agree on the functions of caste and karma. Karma is the individual person's reaping of the results of his actions, good and bad, through a series of lifetimes. The Indian socio-political norm has been characterized by vertical hierarchy in the observance of similar customs and social distance between castes. This contrasts with social and cultural identity in terms of similar belief systems (Thakur, 1993, p. 646). Westernization of the country is felt in the constitution of the country which gives religious freedom and equality to other religious groups. The constitution prohibits some practices of Hindu religion. Infanticide and widow burning can not be practiced even though the custom has been sanctified in rituals for hundreds of years. This is a result of western influence on the practice of Hinduism (Thakur, 1993, p. 648).
