Carlos, on the other hand, is more caught up in a situation that does not appear to offer much opportunity toward professional advancement. Unfortunately, his position as a temporary employee does not offer job security or a path toward such security. He would do well to return to school for training which would give him more marketable skills. At the same time, however, as a Mexican American, Carlos may also face the reality that education may not provide a clear-cut path to economic well-being. This statement is true because many Mexican Americans continue to hold low-paying jobs compared to the majority population. With additional job training, Carlos will still have to overcome racial prejudice as a Mexican American.
The Egyptian man, as a Mideastener, is not even part of a minority group that receives much attention with regard to status in the United States. African Americans, Asians, and Hispanic Americans have been studied with regard to status in America, but less is known about Middle Easterners. It should be kept in mind that Middle Easterners in the United States must blend in with a vastly different culture, much of it influenced by differing religious points of view. Egyptians may be faced with the added burden of religious discrimination, on top of burdens already imposed by their outsider status. In addition, as my interview shows, Egyptians' attitudes toward women may be at odds with American expectations--although that is not specifically the focus of my study. It only serves to illustrate one of the many outside difficulties which may impact an Egyptian male's assimilation into American culture. Total degree of cultural assimilation will affect one's ability to function in the American workplace.
