Joanne Kathleen Rowling, author of the most successful series of childrenÆs books of all time, was born near Bristol, England. She was educated at Exeter University, and for much of her life has lived near Edinburgh. Rowling and her family currently reside in Scotland. She now enjoys the fruits of her literary efforts û which started as a fanciful pipe-dream for the aspiring author. RowlingÆs story has been characterized as a fantasy in itself û the tale of an ordinary mother who stumbled upon an idea for what was to become the fastest selling book of all time. Publicity surrounding Rowling has painted her as a ôstruggling single motherö living in a dingy apartment and writing feverishly to try and make ends meet. This is a misrepresentation of RowlingÆs story. She has set the record straight in recent interviews, commenting that she is tired of her life being portrayed as perpetually miserable and poverty-stricken before her literary success (Weir 3). The truth is that during the time that Rowling was writing her first Harry Potter book, she encountered a period of financial difficulty. She was unable to find employment, and she had become pregnant. During her pregnancy and after the birth of her daughter, she devoted her free time to writing. The famous part of the story is that while her baby slept, Rowling took to visiting a particular favourite cafT in Edinburgh, where she would sit and write the novel in longhand.
