Methodological rationality connotes the theological way of "deriving and stating its propositions" (Tillich, 1951, p. 58), which is on one hand to make a claim for the intellectual integrity of a systematic treatment of faith and on the other to insist on an intellectual consistency of method.

It is from this premise of rationality that Tillich analyzes competing systems of philosophical thought with a view toward clarifying the content of his theology. According to Tillich, the rational enterprise for the Christian theologian must take place from a specifically Christian viewpoint, but whatever is asserted from that viewpoint must be an attribute of clarity about Christian content. Only a Christian theologian who knows his own faith and intellectual tradition, on this view, can engage in meaningful dialogue with other faiths.
