Using neuropeptides as cues, the bodymind network retrieves or represses emotions and behaviors elicited by previous exposure to stimuli. When a ligand alters a receptor, it either facilitates or inhibits a change in membrane potential, so affects which neural circuitry will be used, and therefore whether or not the emotion will be brought to consciousness (143).
