The outcome of World War II also established the United States as the number one post-war nation economically. This was true because all nations in Europe, plus the Soviet Union and the nations of the East, were devastated by the war in ways that the United States was not. In addition, a number of other nations suffered greater human losses and all were far more affected in terms of destruction overall.

Ambrose makes clear that the decision to enter World War II was one which was considered for a long time and in the light of the isolationism which had prevailed throughout the 1930s: "FDR declared four times that his policy was designed to keep the United States out of war" (Ambrose 3).
