The name Albanian came from the Albani tribe of Illyrians who inhabited present day Albania. According to Wilkes, another Illyrian tribe, the Dardanians, were "ancient inhabitants of Kossovo, northern Macedonia and southern Serbia." Alexander says "the name Illyria . . . was at first reserved . . . for the south Jugoslav/Albania region near the Greek frontier and the Adriatic Sea." In the north, there was considerable intermingling before Roman times among Illyrians and Scythians and Celts, who built the first fort at the present site of Belgrade in the 3rd century B.C. In the south, according to Zickel and Iwaskiw, they "intermingled and made war with Greeks, Thracians and Macedonians."
