GULF WAR SYNDROME This research paper discusses

This is an excerpt from the paper...

This research paper discusses the controversy surrounding the symptoms of ill-health developed by a small but significantly significant fraction of veterans of the Persian Gulf War which suggest that they may have been exposed to unusual toxic chemical or other environmental risks during the course of that war. For reasons which are not entirely clear, probably related to institutional inertia and possibly an unwillingness to admit its unpreparedness for chemical and biological warfare, the national security establishment of the American government has been evasive and lacking in credibility on the issues involved. The scientific and medical evidence is far from complete which means that an adequate explanation of the origins of the Gulf War Syndrome has not yet appeared; nevertheless, it appears more likely than not that appreciable numbers of troops were exposed to dangerous chemical substances against which they were inadequately protected by their own governments. Further research into the causes of the Gulf War Syndrome and appropriate modes of treatment is needed.

In response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990, the Allied coalition led by the United States sent a large force to the Persian Gulf area, including about 697,000 American servicemen and women, some of them there from mid-August until the following March. Operation Desert Storm, the war itself, consisted of a 39 day bombing campaign and a four day ground campaign

at chemical weapons traces were found near a former Iraqi chemical munitions depot near Khamisiyah in southern Iraq which was destroyed by an American unit three days after the fighting ended. The Pentagon finally acknowledged that the incident occurred in June, 1996 and that as many as 20,000 American soldiers might have been exposed to chemical weapons on October 1, 1996. -Ex-CIA official-whistleblower married couple Patrick and Robin Eddington claim that the Central Intelligence Agency knew of and covered up at least 60 instances of chemical weapon exposure in the vicinity of American troops in the Gulf (Shenon A14). -Other Gulf war-related possible sources of human contamination include Iraqi mines containing nerve gas accidentally run over by the 2nd Marine Division in Kuwait on the first day of the ground war and reported by Tuite; the residue in dust and in the air from depleted uranium (DU)-encased weapons which were used to destroy Iraqi tanks and trucks; insecticides used to prevent disease; carbon residue from 605 oil wells in Kuwait set ablaze by the retreating Iraqis; possible use of biological agents (germ warfare); and injection of vaccines and taking by mouth of drugs to prevent lethal effects of nerve gas,
