By 1986, 68 percent of married women with children between 6 and 17 were working outside the home, and 58 percent of all married couples with children were two-job families (Hochschild 2), with the number continuing to rise.

Two-career families have become the traditional family, and Scully and Lorenzo were a solid, working example of their generation's ability to adapt to the economic and societal forces that made such a family necessary. Arlie Hochschild notes, "Each marriage bears the footprints of economic and cultural trends which originate far outside marriage" (11). Marriages in previous generations were just as representative of the times and forces in which they occurred. Tamara K. Hareven, for example, observes, "The concept of the home as the family's haven and domestic retreat emerged only about one hundred fifty years ago" (228), while Catherine M. Scholten notes, "The economic reorganization of America substantially altered family life" (83).
