Most animal trainers readily accept that animals show emotions. A circus trainer noted that not all tigers can be trained to jump through a flaming hoop, showing that many of them could not overcome their fear of fire (4). Dog trainers in particular say they could not work with dogs if the animals did not display emotions. There are differences between domestic or tamed animals and wild animals, but all show some form of emotions (7).

In man, emotions can motivate behavior, and some people question if this is possible in animals. Actions which promote survival, such as running away or hiding from predators, are usually explained away on the basis of instincts rather than emotions. It is harder to explain away non-survival behavior. Scientists suggest that a bird does not sing for joy or because he enjoys the song, but to establish territory and to advertise his fitness to possible mates (14).
