Insullin and Atherosclerosis

th such symptoms as obesity, high blood pressure, renal dysfunction, and vision and circulation problems (9:Z7). Additional symptoms include frequent urination, thirst, and fatigue--all aggravated by overweight (5). Severe cases are also said to be marked by arterial "furring" (narrowing), which cuts off blood supply to extremities (11). This explains amputation of limbs in many diabetics (2; 8).

The mechanism of what happens on account of insulin resistance is that fatty substances that are not flushed out of the system by insulin (the blood-sugar-regulating hormone secreted by the pancreas) build up as fatty residue. This residue attaches to the inside linings of vascular tissue--notably arteries, which convey material, including waste products, away from the heart to other parts of the body (6:474). It can therefore be inferred that to the degree the body is in a condition of insulin insensitivity or resistance, the efficiency of disposal of waste glucose is severely limited. The effect on the arteries that fail to flush, so to speak, is a buildup of glucose and related fatty residue. If there is too much insulin in the body, there is not enough ásugar in it to feed the body's processes. This leads to a condition of hypoglycemia (5:297). However, if there is too little insulin in the body, or if the body does not use insulin efficiently (i.e., is insulin resistant), there may be an excess of sugar, and by extension (or vascular adhesion) fats, in the body. This also upsets the body's processes, and tends toward vascular problems. That is because the buildup of sugars and fats fosters a clogging of the inner lining of arteries, i.e., atherosclerosis. And this in turn, given the etiology of clogged arteries for cardiovascular disease, implies risk of heart attack.

This mechanism of bodily function is in the background of a whole range of medi
