The ability of Blacks to employ cognitive-restructuring techniques is further demonstrated by Hatch and Paradis (1993). In a study of agoraphobics, Blacks demonstrated more traumatic life events and higher rates of unstable love relationships, than Whites; cognitive treatment was effective and accepted by group members as a positive experience. A group cognitive behavioral treatment program was used to educate patients regarding coping strategies. Relaxation, diaphragmatic breathing, and cognitive restructuring were taught. Audiovisual aids with causal learning approaches were more acceptable than discussions of written material. African Americans responded to a speaker who was similar to them (African American), and had successfully completed treatment for panic attacks. Blacks demonstrated their need for racial issues to be considered and addressed; group members needed understanding and confirmation from other African Americans (pp. 241-241).
