Another theological notion of determinism is commonly found in the doctrine of predestination which can be defined as the notion that one's destiny is predetermined by God; an idea that would appear to deny the existence of free will (Gerald, 1987). For example, Catholic theologian Saint Augustine firmly believed in predestination, holding that only those elected by God would attain salvation; freedom, for him, was the gift of divine grace (Gerald, 1987). On the other hand, the British monk Pelagius opposed this idea and maintained that everyone, although helped by divine grace to attain salvation, has complete freedom of will to choose or reject the way to God (Gerald, 1987).
