In terms of the animal's range, food appears to be the main determinant in overall group movement. Some researchers such as Fossey have maintained that gorillas go our of their way to avoid contact with another group. In addition, the fact that the gorilla does not seem to be able to swim is another factor influencing is range. The gorilla's reluctance to wade even across shallow streams may partially explain the unusual distribution of the species (3).
